Important Note for Genealogical Societies
If you are disappointed that your ancestral country is underrepresented in the GEDCOM Index, the reason could be that I don’t have enough geographic information about that land. I need a list of localities. If it is a country that no longer exists, I need the current equivalent of each town, so I can file the GEDCOM entries correctly.
Classifying GEDCOM entries in an index like this is no easy task. It requires filing New Shoreham, Rhode Island with Block Island, Rhode Island, because the Town of New Shoreham occupies Block Island. It requires classifying Boston Corner, Massachusetts with Boston Corner, New York, because the town was ceded to New York on 14 May 1853. It requires classifying numerous Virginia towns as West Virginia and classifying Fort Bismarck, Dakota Territory as Bismarck, North Dakota. Now try that with a country that no longer exists!
If I hear from a genealogical society interested in providing geographic and historical geographic information, I can then prioritize GEDCOM files containing entries in that country.
